The month of August is like no other in Paris. Tens of thousands of residents leave for their annual holiday and signs firmly stating "FERMÉ" are a regular and often disappointing notice that favorite shops, florists, bistros and museums are closed until after the 31st.But a festive transformation takes place along The Seine when the Paris Plages (Paris Beaches) program is launched. Riverside roadways are closed, tons of sand are brought in by barge and then fashioned into inviting beaches dotted with blue umbrellas, deck chairs and even palm trees! And it's all free.
You can stroll along, play beach vollyball, enjoy refreshments or just relax with a summer novel, all within view of the Eiffel Tower.
Pétanque boules are provided free for play along the temporary courts.
Paris Plages is a hugely successful event each year. Wriggling your toes in the sand while enjoying the parade of life in Paris certainly seems like the best of both worlds! À bientôt!
How fun! I was in Paris in August of 1987, but I don't think they had Paris Plages then! But it was still a great time to be there~~not too crowded :~)
ReplyDeleteI've never made it to Paris in August since they started the beach along the Seine. It looks like another world! Wonder after the big success of beach volleyball in London if they would consider a beach along the Thames!

ReplyDeleteThose Parisians sure do know how to live! First they take half the month off and then the beach is brought to their doorstep almost! My goodness that seems odd to an american. Not sure that's my kind of beach as I prefer walking on the waters edge, but when you're landlocked you just have to make the best of it I suppose. Lovely!

This is so much fun ! Why aren't we doing the same here in North America, closing everything for a whole month, it would be awesome, but maybe not for the economy !
